Hank O'Sullivan, a sixty-five-year-old widower, lives a routine life, nursing his loneliness with cocktails at his favorite local bar in Austin, Texas. After a parking lot brawl lands him in jail, a judge sentences Hank to community service, picking up trash along the highway alongside a sixteen-year-old troublemaker, Luis Delgado. Luis has remarkable artistic abilities, but his penchant for sneaking out late at night and trespassing onto rooftops lands him on the same road crew as Hank. These loners form an unlikely friendship, and when Hank tells Luis about his desire to drive to Houston to reconnect with an old flame, Luis asks to tag along. Luis's estranged mother lives in Houston, and he has been dreaming of a reunion. Hank agrees to take Luis with him, setting in motion a raucous trip in a hot pink 1970 Plymouth Barracuda. With humor and a bit of grace,The Codger and the Sparrow is a touching story about an unusual friendship that stretches across generations.

Fans of stories about mismatched people are certain to enjoy Brian Craig's narration of this novel. Hank is a curmudgeon who mostly wants to be left alone, except for one last attempt to rekindle a very brief, very one-sided high school romance. Luis is a good-natured guy living in unfortunate but not insurmountable circumstances. Together, the pair make an odd couple, and Craig shares their stories with a perfect mix of wonder, empathy, and enthusiasm. By the end, the listener is sure to be happy to have taken the road trip that unites Hank and Luis in ways expected and unexpected. J.P.S. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine

After losing his wife and daughter in a car accident, 65-year-old Hank O'Sullivan spends his days drinking, hoping to blunt the pain. When he assaults a man in a bar fight, he is sentenced to community service. On his first shift picking up trash, he wanders into a stand of trees and meets 16-year-old Luis Delgado, who, after being caught trespassing, is also completing community service hours. Luis lives with his father, but he is searching for something more. Despite the age difference, Hank and Luis forge a friendship. When Hank decides to drive to Houston to see an old high school flame, Luis tags along, hoping to reconnect with his long-estranged mother. Though neither finds exactly what they'd been seeking, their unexpected friendship helps them weather their many adventures. Semegran (The Benevolent Lords of Sometimes Island) imagines an unusual relationship that comes along just in time to create a bridge from old lives to new ones. His quirky characters are interesting and believable. Narrator Brian P. Craig proves vocally versatile, seamlessly shifting from the gravelly tones of Hank to the youthful voice of Luis. VERDICT An appealing story of friendship, family, age, loss, and redemption.--Joanna M. Burkhardt
