This fourth and final book ends the Luxe series well. Once again, we are in New York's Gilded Age with the scions of wealth; once again, the older Holland sister is in peril while the younger pursues her true love; and once again, the cover features an unbelievably luscious gown. This romantic series invites readers to suspend disbelief and enjoy a Gossip Girl-style romp through the Age of Innocence. The unfamiliar should start with Luxe (2007), Rumors (2008), and Envy (2009). Love-o-meter: Steamier than you might think. Designed to bridge the gap between teen love stories and grown-up historical romances, these hefty books have never shied away from an undone corset. In Splendor, the young Diana Holland is caught bedding the very-married Henry Schoonmaker and sent home to nurse her broken heart. Will the lovers ever be reunited?-Angelina Benedetti, King Cty. Lib. In this Luxe franchise ender, each of the protagonists--free-spirited Diana, conniving Penelope, deceitful Carolina, and sincere Elizabeth--gets, more or less, what she deserves. Tragedy and disaster are avoided, and the truth prevails. Historical detail is thinner than ever in this sweeping, romantic volume that instead focuses on emotional crises and dramatic revelations in addition to elaborate costuming and coiffure.
