When the Twin Towers suddenly reappear in the badlands of South Dakota twenty years after their fall, nobody can explain their return. To the hundreds, then thousands, then tens of thousands drawn to the "American Stonehenge"—including Parker and Zema, siblings on their way from Los Angeles to visit their mother in Michigan—the Towers seem to sing, even as everybody hears a different song. A rumor overtakes the throng that someone can be seen in the high windows of the southern structure.

On the ninety-third floor, Jesse Presley—the stillborn twin of the most famous singer who ever lived—suddenly awakes, driven mad over the hours and days to come by a voice in his head that sounds like his but isn't, and by the memory of a country where he survived in his brother's place. Meanwhile, Parker and Zema cross a possessed landscape by a mysterious detour no one knows, charted on a map that no one has seen.

Haunting, audacious, and undaunted, Shadowbahn is a winding and reckless ride through intersections of danger, destiny, and the conjoined halves of a ruptured nation.

In Erickson’s mind-bending latest, the Twin Towers suddenly reappear in the South Dakota badlands 20 years after 9/11, and as gawkers gather from around the fractured remains of the United States to see the structures, Jesse Presley, the twin of Elvis (who was stillborn back in 1935), comes to life as an adult on the 93rd floor of one of the towers. Unsure of where he is, Jesse wanders the floors and eventually bounces through time, experiencing a world in which he is shamed for taking the place of his famous brother. Frustrated and jealous, Jesse makes it his mission to destroy all music. Meanwhile, siblings Parker and Zema hear about the rematerialized Towers while driving from California to Michigan to visit their mother, and they decide to take a detour, yet as music slowly begins to disappear around them—vanishing from radio stations and physically from CDs and LPs—they soon realize their car, streaming playlists made by their late novelist father, is the only source of song left. Unusually structured and daringly written, Erickson’s gem of a novel is equally challenging and rewarding, spinning out thread after thread of story before skillfully tying them together in a satisfying climax. Agent: Melanie Jackson, Melanie Jackson Agency.

Malcolm Hillgartner's narration is reminiscent of classic "Twilight Zone" voice-overs. This audiobook mostly defies summary, save for a few key starting points. Two decades after 9/11, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center suddenly reappear in the Dakota Badlands. On the 93rd floor of one of the towers, Jesse Presley, the stillborn twin of Elvis, blinks into existence, unsure of exactly who is he is or where he came from. In California, siblings Parker and Zema begin a road trip to Michigan, with a detour to visit the towers. The story's structure (or lack thereof) initially may be jarring, but Hillgartner is a stabilizing presence. His commanding delivery makes the impossible seem plausible, and guides listeners through a surreal journey. A.T.N. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine
