In 1966, I got drafted and sent to Vietnam, not as a combat soldier, but as a support troop. For every combat soldier, there are 10 non combat soldiers who handle supply, transport, and administration. I was lucky to become a mailman attached to the 90th Replacement Battalion. My year was filled with surprises, and good fortune. On the night of Tet with fighting all around, I travelled into the midst of it, and caught a plane north towards the DMZ, reassigned to the First Air Cav. My goal was in writing this was to reflect on my time of being a support soldier in the middle of chaos.
