In Perrin's (Undeniable Attraction) latest, Shayla Phillips returns to the small town where she grew up in order to care for her sick mother. She left her hometown years ago, when it seemed like the whole town had turned against her as rumors mounted about her involvement in the shocking double homicide of two of her friends. Even after all these years, though, someone is still convinced of her guilt and threatening her, so she hires her old crush, Tavis Saunders, as a bodyguard. Nearly every named character harbors a secret of some sort, leading readers to constantly second-guess motives and wonder who is the real killer. VERDICT Pairing the subtleties of Shayla and Tavis's romance with social commentary, this is an excellent choice to round out a collection.--Mary Frances Cely
