Grades 7-10 In this volume in the Exploring Solutions series (3 titles), author Stephan takes on one of the most vexing social and political problems in America today: gun violence. She does an excellent job of providing background and contextual information. Some of that information is familiar, though some might be surprising: (5 percent of dealers supply 90 percent of guns used in crimes). The heart of the book, however, is her treatment of possible solutions to what many regard as an impossible problem. A few examples: changing the physical environment, using threat assessment teams, enabling the grossly underfunded ATF to better enforce laws. To emphasize and expand information, the book uses numerous pull quotes and sidebar features (""The Recent Spike in Gun Violence""). Altogether, the book is timely and invaluable for use in classrooms.

Gr 6 Up-Some societal problems seem insurmountable. This series examines a few such problems and explores potential solutions. Each book begins with an analysis of the topic and the damage it causes to individuals and society, including examples in recent history. A number of solutions are offered, such as using AI to combat the spread of misinformation or switching to renewable energy to fight climate change. But the downside to each solution is also thoroughly laid out. Readers are left with the opportunity to compare the intent of the plan versus weaknesses. Large images break up the text and brightly colored text boxes feature quotes and extra information. Source notes and additional resources are included. VERDICT Well considered and laid out, this series provides helpful research material.
